Training

We will provide staff (especially Doctors, nurses, Laboratory technicians, orderlies, cleaners) of the health facilities with adequate training on healthcare waste management. A training schedule will be drawn to provide opportunity for each department to partake in the exercise. The training takes an average period of one hour.

Provision of Waste Segregation Materials

For the purposes of proper segregation of waste, colour coded bins and liners will be provided for facilities that lack these logistics for efficient waste management. The waste segregation will be based on the Ministry of Health (MOH) Colour Coding Chart

Collection and Transportation of Waste

  • We have well trained medical waste personnel that will collect the healthcare waste from the various health facilities.
  • The waste will be transported with a specialized truck for medical waste. This truck has a refrigeration system that inhibits the activities of microorganisms during transportation to the treatment facility to reduce the emission of foul odour.
  • The medical waste collected will be weighed on-site and a voucher stating the weight of waste, number of bags, date and time will be given to the Environmental Unit for record keeping.

    Scheduled collection and transportation of hazardous healthcare waste from health facilities.

    We have well trained medical waste personnel that will collect the healthcare waste from the various health facilities. The waste will be transported with a specialized truck for medical waste.     Treatment and disposal of hazardous healthcare waste.

    All the infectious waste and disposable PPEs collected from the various centres are treated at the Centralized Medical Waste Treatment Facility. It is the first and only Centralized Medical Waste Treatment Facility in Ghana with a capacity of treating 20 tonnes of hazardous waste a day. The facility handles all types of hazardous medical waste from all healthcare institution thus; pharmaceutical waste, infectious waste, pathological waste, chemical waste, sharps waste etc.

    The structure of the training is as follows;

    Pre-Test.

    Presentation

    Definition and categorization of medical waste.
    Need for proper medical waste management.
    Risks and consequences of improper medical waste management.
    Medical waste management procedures (Practical Section).
    Video presentation and discussions.
    Post –Test
    We will monitor the activities of the staff with regards to the waste management practices and ensure that everyone abides by the laid down guidelines and policies. Our well trained medical waste officers will be enforcing these guidelines in the health facilities in collaboration with focal persons appointed there.
